· ARTIST STATEMENT ·

As an artist Gary T. Knox was influenced by John Biggers, Jacob Lawrence, Ernie Barnes, Elizabeth Catlett, and Aaron Douglas. He has a passion for creating art that draws from the rich cultural history of African Americans and African diasporic peoples.

Gary’s work reveals a fascination with the fluidity of geometric shapes in figurative and abstract art.  He shines a light on the easily missed nuances and subtleties of everyday life, particularly those aspects of life that define us as beautifully and powerfully human. Relying on the innovative and transgressive interweavings of acrylic, oil, pencil, and air brush, he brings our attention to the transformational power of place, light, time, music, movement, and relationships, and he illuminates the complexities of our human struggles and triumphs.

As a Fulton Street Art Fair Member, Gary has participated in numerous art fairs in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and New Jersey.  He has also participated in and been a featured artist in auctions and group shows. He has illustrated children’s books as well as professional trade books for academics. His paintings, including portraits, are also featured in private collections.
